More than just meetings

Did my first “keepers of the public way” thing today.

When a developer finishes a subdivision project and all conditions set by the Planning Board have been met, the developer (typically) requests that the Town accept the new street as part of its public roadways.  The Select Board then needs to recommend to Town Meeting whether or not the new street is ready to be accepted by the Town.

Gerry and I met Town Engineer Jason Skeels at two sites today – Moody Field Road, off of Snell Street, and Rosemary Street and Lilac Lane, off of Pine Street, for an inspection.  A couple of residents came to each, and a representative of the developer was at one.  This was primarily a lesson in street lights, drainage issues and retention ponds.

It appears that all the conditions have been met at both sites, though Jason will double-check lighting issues on Rosemary and Lilac.

One interesting incidental point that came up:  apparently there is some confusion as to whether Rosemary Street is really called that, or if it’s called Rosemary Lane.  The sign says “street,” but some believe it should be “lane,” and the fact that they are used interchangeably creates complications occasionally, such as when using Google maps, or getting a FedEx delivery.  As one who lives on a street that shares its name with a dorm (and for added confusion, it’s not the dorm that’s on the street,) I sympathize with such annoyances.  No word on how or if an official street vs. lane determination might be made, or by whom.

Of note:  Monday is Patriots Day, so the Select Board won’t meet.  Instead, it will meet Wednesday, April 23rd, 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Also of note:  I’m still doing “office hours” on Monday mornings at Black Sheep, but due to the holiday, I won’t be there this Monday.  Come and see me Monday the 28th and non-holiday Mondays thereafter from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and let me know what’s on your mind.

I suggest that you check out the MA Registry of Deeds for information on which is correct regarding Rosemary Street or Lane. If you look at Plan Book 176, page 202, the official recording for the development says Rosemary Street.
